02 year classroom training for Ishita

During my association with a premier institute of Mumbai, I got an opportunity to fundamentally create a huge impact on one of my students - Ishita. Ishita was in Class IX ICSE when I started teaching her. I started teaching her basics of Physics. On my very first class with her, I realized largely that she is brawling with Mathematics. I conducted a Parent Teacher meeting and also gathered feedback from her previous tutors to understand her learning preferences. Although, being a grade IX student, Ishita was unable to solve a moderate grade 7 Math Equation and was not clear with algebra fundamentals. Ishita struggled with basic concepts of polynomials, algebraic additions and so on. This had developed an anxiety and fear of Mathematics in her mind because of which she started hating Math. It took me more than a week or a fortnight to convince Ishita that this is a very common tendency among students in this age. And after that, we did not stop, I started designing a plan for Ishita's Math Curriculum.

Targeting IB Exams & brainstorming Internal Assessment with Krish

During the 2019-20 pandemic (due to COVID-19), it was a major leap for us Educators when we had to leave our classrooms and teach students using only technological tools. More the less, there was a huge restriction on usage of technological & digital tools as we were not going to schools & institutes to teach. My subject being Mathematics, it was indeed a bigger challenge to train students for their examinations via online media. However, not losing any hopes, I continued to put my best foot forward. Krish came to me via reference and her mother requested me to train him for his IB examinations. Krish had shifted to IB in Grade 11 from Canadian curriculum in his lower grades. My major challenge teaching Krish was to make him unlearn some of the concepts he had learnt in his online schooling during the COVID-19 era. IB itself undergoing changes in its curriculum during 2020, Krish struggled with submitting his Internal Assessment in school. Overall, I conducted two months of rigorous training only for his IA, apart from regular classes for his IB Exams, for selecting his IA topic, creating a draft for his IA and refinining the conceptual detailing prior to his final submission in the following segments: a) The training period mainly involved sessions on selecting the appropriate topic based on Krish's strengths (Calculus & Statistics). b) As Krish was from a different curriculum in his lower grades, with the help of instructions from his school guide, I also taught him how to collect the data for his project, formally write the paper and present as per IB IA guidelines. c) Last few sessions for IA were discussed on Use of Mathematical Communication and how to concise the document.

This is one of my many favorite testimonials which I am excited to share with you all. Gargeyi is another one of my former students who is multi-talented and into too many things trying to achieve it all. I embraced teaching Calculus to her and trained her for APs in an all direction 270° manner (except enrolments). Gargeyi is from Bengaluru, India and I took her virtual sessions for AP Calculus. Although, Gargeyi had exceptional grasping ability for the concepts taught to her, she lacked awareness to explore the concepts. This hesitation to get involved into the mathematical understanding of solving problems reflected in the classroom too. Gargeyi barely asked questions relevant to exploring Math or queries which enhanced her application-based understanding. One of the challenges to get the best out of her every week was guiding her on Calculator usage. She wasn’t a quiet student, but her questions were more generous, and situation-based rather than the complexity or analytical concepts taught. Probably because she really understood everything (difficult to gauge these teens virtually 😛). Because, Gargeyi aced her AP Calculus with a five and also received Honor Roll.
